Pro -Skills has recently worked with year 6 children from Windmill primary school to deliver a crash course in cricket in preparation for a schools tournament in
London at the home of cricket Lords.
The crash course was delivered over 10 one hour sessions and taught the kids all the basic aspects of cricket from the general rules and
etiquettes of the game to simple techniques and skills to turn them from novices to pro’s in the space of 2 weeks.
Over the 10 sessions the kids learnt how to stand correctly whilst batting and how to play standard shots such as the straight drive and pull shot.
They also learnt how to bowl over- arm correctly and how to include a run up and follow through into their bowling.
This was done to great success with all 10 of the children in the squad feeling confident enough to bowl over -arm at the tournament by the end of the sessions.
Fielding was another aspect of the game the children really enjoyed practicing and learning the techniques for in particular the 25 catching game
which played a massive role in improving the catching ability and technique of the children. The fielding ability progressed to such a standard
more complicated drills such as backing up throws and other awareness drills were introduced to help the children with their cricket knowledge.
At Lords the school took part in an 8 team tournament finishing 4th after losing their only game in the 3rd/4th place final having missed
out on a place in the overall final on runs scored throughout the group stages. This was a massive achievement for a group of children with
limited cricket experience if not none at all going up against teams with experienced players in them.
Whilst their the children also got the opportunity to have a tour of the ground and got to walk across the hallowed turf, visit the famous pavilion
and sit in the England changing rooms and also take in the stunning views from the NatWest media centre, which the kids affectionately names ‘the big spaceship’.
Due to the success in the tournament and the children’s enjoyment of the sessions, Pro-Skills is to continue running after school coaching sessions with the school for the foreseeable future.

The team at Lords.
